PRACTICAL LIFE

Montessori often gets a bad wrap about being too expensive, but it’s not true! And I’m going to prove it to you today by telling you how to use Montessori at home on a budget! I want to give every parent the chance to bring Montessori into their home, no matter their income level.

It’s important to remember that each child is unique in their own way. This Montessori guide is meant to help bring Montessori into your home but the best way you can do that is to follow your child’s lead and watch for their sensitive periods. Use these suggestions below and find the perfect fit for your home and toddler.

Montessori At Home On A Budget

Following the Montessori Mindsets

Montessori mindsets are by far the best place to start with Montessori and it’s by far the cheapest place to start! You can grab any number of Montessori books for less than $20 and they will all help you get started with Montessori. Here are a few of my favorite Montessori books:

Preparing Your Environment

This will be different for each child but as you follow their lead you will be able to help them by creating freedom within limits in a prepared environment. Check your local second-hand shops or bargain stores for lower cost items. Here are some items you can add to your home to prepare your environment:

  • Low Shelving (eye level)
  • Small Stool
  • Child-Sized Chair
  • Child-Sized Table

Practical Life Activities

While there may be a small expense with these activities you won’t be spending loads and loads of money to get them up and running. In fact, you can often find all the things you need to set these activities up already in your home. Here are some great ideas for practical life activities:

  • Hand/Face Washing Station
  • Window Cleaning Tray
  • Squeezing Juice Tray
  • Washing a Table Activity
  • Mirror Polishing Tray
  • Watering Plant Activity

Montessori Activities

It is suggested to set up 6-8 items on your child’s low shelving. They should include practical life activities, Montessori materials, and Montessori activities. Again you can usually find everything you need to set these activities up in your home already. Here are a some of our all-time favorite Montessori activities:

  • Transferring Beans
  • Pouring Water
  • Sorting Colors
  • Sensory Activities
