PREPARING YOUR ENVIRONMENT

Montessori inspired activities for your 27 month old

Supporting your child through a prepared environment is always the best place to start with Montessori. Your child will be going through several sensitive periods throughout their childhood so having a consistent environment will help them feel stable and secure. As their world changes around them having this sense of order in their prepared environment will help greatly!

You can start preparing your home environment with child sized materials and practical life stations. If you haven’t yet created some practical life stations throughout your home this is the perfect time to do so. For instance a self-care station in the bathroom, wooden stool by their dressing area, or a self-serve station in the kitchen.

Creating distraction free spaces for your child’s independence to grow should be the number one objective to preparing your environment.  You can read more about preparing your home environment by clicking here.

So follow their lead and give them the activities that are compatible to their developmental stage, sensitive periods and interests.

If you’re just getting started with Montessori remember that your child won’t always be able to understand something on the first try. My son is 27 months. I read that the emotional build from birth to 2. Recently he has been showing tantrums (crying loudly following with screaming) it happened after being outdoor such as morning walk n play in the playground. We did cuddle him but only few seconds he repeated again. We have started draw happy emoji on blackboard so he can start a happy day.He also clinging and whining a lot recently. Again we tried many time to deescalate the situation before his tantrums started.Help please! We have 2 months old daughter as well.is it about the jealousy?many thanks

    Julie,

First, know that tantrums are normal for this age range! They don’t have the emotional control to handle the flood of emotions they experience. So our main focus shouldn’t be to stop tantrums, but rather help them learn how to manage their emotions. With that in mind, I would focus on the underlying struggle. If its after being outside it could be more them struggling with transitions, or them not wanting to stop the activity. If its transitions you can prepare them by explaining before hand what will happen in what order and giving warnings before changes. If they don’t want to stop the activity you can connect and validate their feelings. “I hear you! Walking outside is something I love to do! Right now its time to go inside.” In some instances that may be enough. In other cases they may still throw a tantrum as a way to express their anger. In that case provide cuddles or sit off to the side, whichever they need most. Once the flood has ceased you can reconnect and revalidate feelings. Here is a good read on tantrums from a Montessori perspective.

With their new sister, they could also be feeling jealous and a little resentful. If you can set aside some one-on-one time with them that may ease these feelings. Enlisting the child as the helper can also be helpful.
“Can you bring me a diaper for your sister?”
“What do you think she should wear? This outfit or this outfit?”.

I’m new to Montessori but have always done child led, which can sometimes look a mess at the end of the activity. My 27 month old enjoys coloring and painting and flipping through books. Is coloring and painting apart of the Montessori approach? If so, how can I make it more independent?

    Colleen H Reply

    Chaney,

Art is absolutely apart of the Montessori approach! A great way to make it more independent would be to keep the items in accessible containers. Perhaps you have small jars where you can put a limited amount of paint that your toddler can unscrew. Another option may be to put paints in old pump container so they can get get small amounts when needed.
